The Reality of Money
Published by Cadetrus Smith on April 1, 2014

NewsStudents participated in a hands-on real world activity that allowed them to make financial decisions about paying for housing, transportation and other monthly expenses based on specific scenarios provided with the goal of staying within budget.

Students were given a fictional occupation, salary, spouse and family. They were also given student loan debt, credit card debt, and medical insurance payments. The students then walked around to various table-top stations to “purchase” housing, transportation, food, clothing, household necessities, day care, and other needs. The simulation also included a “help” station to assist with their financial needs. This interactive activity taught students how to make financial decisions and gave them a better understanding of the challenges of living on a budget.

Meaningful connections and teachable moments occurred throughout the day and the experience was just downright FUN!  Here are a few of the responses to the question – “What did you learn from today’s simulation?”

“I learned how to take responsibility for my life”

“I learned parents go through way more than I thought they did, life is a real struggle sometimes”

“I just can’t spend money on anything I want, I have to buy what I need first and also put money into savings”

“I learned that you’re better off not having kids until you have a stable job and there is a whole lot going on in the big world so stay prepared and stay employed!”

“Reality isn’t a game…and without a diploma, you will struggle”

“Kids are expensive. Saving is essential, definitely need to go to college!  Insurance Assistant is not the career path for me!”

Wow! It is clear that these students benefited in many ways from your participation and counseling.  We are truly grateful.
