National Youth HIV & AIDs Awareness DayNATIONAL YOUTH

HIV & AIDS AWARENESS DAY 

will be celebrated 4/10/2017.  

 

Did you know that there were 83 new HIV cases in Cumberland County last year.  Below you will find some additional facts about HIV/AIDs.

 

 

Facts about HIV/AIDS in our nation

About 1.2 million people in the United States are living with HIV. Of those people, 1 in 8 don’t know they are infected.

  • In 2014, an estimated 44,073 people were newly diagnosed with HIV. An estimated 20,896 people were diagnosed with AIDS in 2014. Overall, since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic in the early 1980s, an estimated 1,210,835 people have been diagnosed with AIDS.
  • In 2014, 22% of all new HIV diagnoses were among youth aged 13-24.
  • HIV can affect anyone regardless of sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, gender or age. However, certain groups based on their sexual orientation, gender, race/ethnicity, and age are at higher risk for HIV and merit special consideration because of particular risk factors. The Semi-Annual Teen Pregnancy Education Prevention Parent Workshop will be held in the E. E. Smith Auditorium on April 10, 2017 at 6:00 P.M.   Parents, interested community members, and students are invited to attend.  Free Food, Fun, Discussion, and Door Prizes!

The CCC-NCAEOP would like to present up to $3,000 total student scholarships for qualified applicants to assist with the cost of their college education. This year, the Association is proud to award three scholarships to CCC-NCAEOP members’ children – two in the amount of $1,000 and one for $500. One $500 scholarship will be awarded to a non-member’s child.  Last year, the CCC-NCAEOP awarded a total of $1,500 in scholarships. Completed applications are to be turned in prior to the deadline to Tresea Adams at Central Records, located in the Operations Center on 810 Gillespie Street.  The deadline is April 7, 2017  If you are interest there is a downloadable application below.

E. E. Smith’s Fire Academy competed in the Regional Skills USA Competition on Friday, March 3, 2017.  Our school was one of the four high schools from Cumberland County that exhibited a high degree of excellence and professionalism.  Fire Academy members won the first five positions in the intermediate competition.  All twenty-four students that competed will go on to the North Carolina Skills USA Competition in Greensboro. Great News indeed!
